Video: Galaxy Generator and Some Gameplay

Hi, sorry for the silence. The workload has been tough... but I have been quietly working hard on Galaxial over the past year. The project is still very much alive, and I have never come close to giving up on it! ...it is just ambitious for one developer, and is taking much longer than I thought it would. :?

Here is a video of me playing around with the galaxy generator settings, as well as some other gameplay.

Colony interface screen for building facilities. Currently in the game there are:
  • Deep Space Tracking Station - for increased view range into adjacent starlanes
  • Entertainment Centre - for increasing population happiness
  • Financial Centre - for increasing credits income
  • Fleet Academy - for training crew for ships
  • Hydroponics - for planets lacking food production
  • Military Academy - for training troops for planetary invasions
  • Planetary Defence Centre - for increasing defence at planets
  • Refinery - for processing mined metals
  • Research Laboratory - for generating research data to spend on advanced items and projects
  • Shipyard - for building new ships
Image
Empire influence blobs show the controlled territory for each faction on the galaxy map. I'm quite pleased with how these look now.

I made a number of loading screen and menu themes. I couldn't decide which one to use, so one is picked at random each time the game is run. It is also very simple to add your own.

Damn, where can I pre-order? :D

Epic stuff, could you also update your blog with this video and post? So people know about it. :) Nice to see shields on ships. :D

I got to love the EVE culture things, like the map and empire influence...

Awesome, awesome stuff... will you plan to integrate multiplayer mode too in the future?

Any chance you will open some alpha/beta-testing or any ETA on the game?

Would love to see more vids.

Thanks for the awesome update!

I would like to keep the development log posts centralized just on the forum now. I also copy everything across to http://www.indiedb.com/games/galaxial
So having three different places would be a bit too much I feel.

This is something I would of course love to add in the future, but I'm not sure will be possible until a very major expansion or "Galaxial 2"?! :?
A lot of the game would need to be redesigned, and significant amounts of code rewritten for multiplayer I'm afraid.
Damn, where can I pre-order? :D

As we get even closer to the finished game, there will be some more information on these. ;)

Hey Stuart

I have been following the development of this game quietly for over a year now and am supper happy to see that you are still working on it. The game show a lot of promise and I really like the EVE(single player) feel of the game. Keep up the great work and as much as want the game to be finished yesterday, I'm glad to see that you are not rushing anything. Better to wait for a quality game that you can get hours and hours of enjoyment out of then some of the recently rushed 4x games that are just lifeless and flat.

I've been folowing the development of this game and I must say i'm quite surprised with what you've done so far, the game looks really great!

I'm curious, which algorithms did you use to generate the galaxies?

The planets positions are generated randomly, with input parameters to create the different galaxy shapes (irregular, spiral, ring etc.)
The jump-lane links are generated using a Gabriel Graph. Links are removed if they are long, or the angle is too close to another link. The dead end parameter when creating the galaxy determines how many of these links should get removed.
